That's the Way the Cookie Crumbles

I believe this qualifies as the yummiest victim, to-date, of our crumbling economy.

With the bail out and presidential election dominating the headlines in October, I failed to realize until now that Mother's Cookies was shut down in mid-October when the parent company filed for bankruptcy. Another one bites the dust. This was a bay area based company, and you may not be familiar with these little yummies if you're not a west-coaster, but let me assure you they are yummy. 3 grams of fat per serving yummy! Which is one reason they've been reserved for only an occasional treat.

I'm going to the grocery store tomorrow to see if there are any left on the shelf. If there are, I will buy a bag. And save it for a special occasion. And then I will share it with someone who also has fond childhood memories of little blobby, pink and white frosted cookies with crunchy sprinkles in their lunch sack. Adios my animal cookie friends.

Someone is selling these memorial t-shirts. Cute.

  1. Oh, a classic is dead. Very sad! I would share the cookies with you if I had some. What a memory, and yes, the crunchy sprinkles on the very creamy frosting (that left a coating of wax on the roof of your mouth)bring fond thoughts of childhood, when we had no clue about fat, saturated, hydrogenated or otherwise because we were too busy playing.

  2. M is going to completely FREAK OUT! He (and the boys) love eating them when they go on camping or hunting trips. So sad...

  3. I heard about that news today and am seriouly heartbroken. I loved the Taffy and English Tea sandwhich cookies. I, too am heading to Fry's tomorrow to clean out their stock (if there is any left) and then I will hoard them all! Sorry boys...that's the way the cookie crumbles!

  4. oh man this was one of Aaron's items...he actually came home with a sad look on his face that day. We used to get the mix bag with the choc chip and the oreo style, but with chocolate frosting, and of course the famous pink and white frosted animals. I hate milk, but this is the ONE AND only cookie I would dunk.

  5. Oh no! These are one of the best comfort sweets ever! We knew we were loved when these showed up in our cupboards growing up. What a downer for my day...Sarah, I hope you left some on the Wal-Mart shelves so I can buy that last memorial bag.
